Brisbane is the wettest with about 22.2 mm, while Newcastle, Canberra and Sydney also see heavy rain. Out west and in the tropical north the picture is very different, with Broome the hottest at 36°C.

Heavy rain on the east coast today

A wet band sits over the east coast and the inland capital. Brisbane has heavy rain and about 22.2 mm, with highs of 26°C. The Gold Coast is also wet, with about 9.0 mm, and showers nearby could be heavier. Further south, Newcastle collects about 15.0 mm, Canberra about 11.1 mm and Sydney about 10.6 mm. That is enough to make roads slick and slow the commute.

New South Wales and the ACT

Sydney and Newcastle both start the week with heavy rain, but it eases quickly. On Wednesday 4 November rain continues but with much smaller totals, though winds pick up to around 39 km/h in Sydney. Canberra follows the same pattern, with heavy rain today and lighter rain tomorrow. By Thursday 5 November all three are mostly sunny, although Newcastle stays breezy with winds near 42 km/h.

Queensland and the tropical north

Queensland is split. Brisbane and the Gold Coast are wet today, but the north is dry and warm. Townsville reaches 29°C and Cairns 30°C, with little or no rain. In the Northern Territory, Darwin is hot at 35°C with rain at times, a sign the wet season is trying to build. Alice Springs is dry and sunny at 35°C.

South and west: Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia

Melbourne is mostly sunny but cool today, with a high of 16°C. Hobart sees light showers and 16°C. Adelaide starts foggy and mild at 21°C. In Western Australia, Perth has rain at 21°C, while Broome is the national hot spot at 36°C with fresh winds near 30 km/h.

The next few days

The rain shifts south. Melbourne gets heavy rain on Wednesday 4 November, about 13.2 mm, and stays wet on Thursday 5 November and Friday 6 November, with about 9.6 mm on Friday. Hobart sees rain on Wednesday 4 November, then fog on Thursday 5 November. Adelaide has rain on Wednesday 4 November with winds near 32 km/h, then clears by Friday 6 November.

Meanwhile, the east dries out and warms. Brisbane reaches 31°C on Wednesday 4 November and 32°C on Thursday 5 November, and the Gold Coast hits 33°C on Thursday 5 November. Perth warms steadily to 31°C by Friday 6 November. Broome climbs to 38°C on Friday 6 November, and Darwin turns wetter again on Thursday 5 November with about 9.5 mm.

What it means for you

Allow extra time on the roads in Brisbane, Sydney, Newcastle and Canberra today, as heavy rain slows traffic.

In Melbourne, plan outdoor activities for today, as rain arrives on Wednesday 4 November and lingers.

In Broome, Darwin and Alice Springs, drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day.

Expect windy conditions in Sydney and Newcastle, so secure loose items outdoors.

Today city by city

City

Region

High

Low

Rain

Wind

Sky

Sydney

New South Wales

23°C

18°C

10.6 mm

31 km/h

heavy rain

Newcastle

New South Wales

26°C

18°C

15.0 mm

28 km/h

heavy rain

Canberra

ACT

22°C

12°C

11.1 mm

21 km/h

heavy rain

Melbourne

Victoria

16°C

12°C

0.0 mm

23 km/h

mostly sunny

Hobart

Tasmania

16°C

10°C

0.6 mm

24 km/h

light showers

Brisbane

Queensland

26°C

19°C

22.2 mm

18 km/h

heavy rain

Gold Coast

Queensland

26°C

18°C

9.0 mm

26 km/h

rain

Townsville

Queensland

29°C

26°C

0.1 mm

22 km/h

mostly sunny

Cairns

Queensland

30°C

24°C

0.0 mm

15 km/h

cloudy

Adelaide

South Australia

21°C

10°C

0.0 mm

17 km/h

fog

Perth

Western Australia

21°C

16°C

1.5 mm

20 km/h

rain

Broome

Western Australia

36°C

28°C

0.0 mm

30 km/h

mostly sunny

Darwin

Northern Territory

35°C

28°C

2.2 mm

16 km/h

rain

Alice Springs

Northern Territory

35°C

22°C

0.0 mm

28 km/h

mostly sunny

Forecast retrieved 2 November 2026, 19:31 UTC for 14 cities across Australia, each checked with four points about 30 km around it.
