Osaka is in line for 72.4 mm of heavy rain, the most of any major city, while Doha, Jeddah, Karachi and Mumbai all climb to 37°C (99°F) under mostly sunny skies.

Osaka and Tokyo: the heaviest rain in the world today

Japan takes the brunt of the wet weather. Osaka’s 72.4 mm is a very large amount for a single day, and it falls with temperatures of only around 20°C, so it will feel raw as well as soaking. Tokyo is not far behind with 40.2 mm of heavy rain. Winds of 25 to 26 km/h will not add much danger on their own, but this much water in a short time means roads and low-lying areas can struggle to drain.

Gulf and South Asia: heat holds at 37°C

At the other extreme, four cities share the top temperature of 37°C: Karachi, Mumbai, Jeddah and Doha. Dhaka is close behind at 35°C (95°F), and Dubai and Riyadh reach 34°C (93°F). Jeddah stays especially warm overnight, with a low of 28°C (82°F), so there is little relief after dark. Doha has a few light showers, though only 0.2 mm is expected, which will not cool anything down.

Further north in South Asia it is more comfortable. Delhi reaches 30°C and Lahore 28°C, with sunshine. The exception is Sri Lanka, where Colombo has 44.1 mm of heavy rain and winds of 35 km/h.

Europe: wet, windy and turning cold in the north

A band of rain covers much of northern and central Europe. Manchester has heavy rain, with 10.7 mm and winds of 31 km/h, while Dublin and Amsterdam both see winds of 35 km/h. Helsinki is the windiest spot in the region at 42 km/h, with rain. Berlin, Warsaw and Oslo also have rain, with highs of 11 to 13°C.

The coldest air is farther out. Reykjavík only reaches 4°C (39°F) and drops to 1°C (34°F) under fog. Moscow is cloudy with a high of 9°C (48°F).

In the south, the story is rain rather than cold. Athens gets 31.8 mm of heavy rain with a high of 19°C. Madrid, Lisbon and Rome stay dry, with highs of 21 to 22°C, though Lisbon starts under fog.

North America: Miami’s storm-force winds, Denver’s rain

Miami is the main trouble spot, with 22.5 mm of heavy rain and winds up to 53 km/h, the strongest of any city today. Denver also has heavy rain, 13.6 mm, with a high of only 14°C. Most of the rest of the country is quiet. New York, Washington, Atlanta and Boston are mostly sunny, though mornings are chilly: Boston falls to 6°C (43°F). Phoenix reaches 28°C and Los Angeles 25°C.

Southern Hemisphere: a gusty Sydney and wet Brazil

Sydney is sunny but breezy, with winds up to 41 km/h. Brisbane is warmer at 31°C (88°F) with some rain. In South America, Rio de Janeiro has 5.9 mm of rain and winds of 35 km/h, and São Paulo gets 4.7 mm. Buenos Aires is dry and mostly sunny. In Africa, Lagos and Nairobi both see rain, while Johannesburg is dry and reaches 30°C.

What it means for travellers and people outdoors

Japan: allow extra time for journeys around Osaka and Tokyo, and avoid low-lying routes where water can collect.

Gulf and South Asia: keep outdoor activity for the cooler parts of the day, drink plenty of water and take shade in the afternoon.

Miami: expect a rough day for flights and driving, with heavy rain and strong winds. Secure loose items outside.

Northern Europe: pack waterproofs and expect a blustery day, especially around the Irish Sea, the North Sea coast and Helsinki.

Athens: heavy rain can make pavements and roads slippery, so leave extra time.

The numbers

City

High

Low

Rain

Sky

Karachi, Pakistan

37°C

23°C

0.0 mm

mostly sunny

Mumbai, India

37°C

26°C

0.0 mm

mostly sunny

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

37°C

28°C

0.0 mm

mostly sunny

Doha, Qatar

37°C

25°C

0.2 mm

light showers

Reykjavík, Iceland

4°C

1°C

0.0 mm

fog

Moscow, Russia

9°C

4°C

0.0 mm

cloudy

Zurich, Switzerland

12°C

5°C

0.1 mm

cloudy

Boston, United States

18°C

6°C

0.0 mm

mostly sunny

Osaka, Japan

21°C

20°C

72.4 mm

heavy rain

Colombo, Sri Lanka

27°C

25°C

44.1 mm

heavy rain

Tokyo, Japan

19°C

16°C

40.2 mm

heavy rain

Athens, Greece

19°C

15°C

31.8 mm

heavy rain

Forecast retrieved 25 October 2026, 20:00 UTC for 84 major cities.
