Rain affects Wales, North West England and Yorkshire today, while the south stays cloudy and dry. Fog spreads on Thursday and Friday, and rain returns to Scotland on Saturday.

AT A GLANCE
- Rain today in Wales, Manchester and Leeds
- Windiest in Aberystwyth, 28 mph, and Aberdeen, 25 mph
- Mild everywhere, highs 12 to 16°C
- Rain returns to Scotland on Saturday 31 October
Today, Wednesday 28 October, the wettest weather in the UK is across Wales, North West England and Yorkshire, where steady rain is expected. Most of the south and east stays cloudy but dry, and Scotland sees a mix of cloud, light showers and a brisk breeze. It is a mild day everywhere, with highs between 12 and 16°C.
Where is it raining today?
Wales has the heaviest rain. Cardiff is set for about 2.3 mm and Aberystwyth about 1.3 mm, and showers are possible nearby with heavier bursts. Aberystwyth is also the breeziest of the rain areas, with winds of 28 mph, so it will feel rawer on the coast.
Rain also reaches Manchester, with about 1.9 mm, and Leeds, with about 1.0 mm. Showers are possible nearby, so some places could catch more than these totals.
Weather in England today
Further south and east the day is quieter. London, Southampton, Birmingham and Norwich are all cloudy and dry, with highs of 14 to 16°C. Southampton is the warmest of our cities at 16°C. Bristol has a few light showers, though only about 0.2 mm is expected, and Plymouth stays dry and cloudy.
Newcastle is cloudy and dry with a fresher breeze of 17 mph, which is stronger than in most of England.
Scotland and Northern Ireland
Scotland is mostly dry but breezy. Aberdeen has the best of the sunshine, with mostly sunny skies, though winds reach 25 mph. Edinburgh is cloudy with winds of 20 mph, and Inverness is cloudy with just a trace of rain. Glasgow has light showers, with more possible nearby, and the coolest high of the day at 12°C.
Belfast has light showers and a high of 14°C, with winds of 16 mph.
The next few days
Thursday 29 October brings a calmer, drier day for most. Winds ease, and cloud dominates, but fog develops in Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Norwich and Cardiff. Highs stay around 13 to 15°C.
On Friday 30 October fog lingers in London, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Norwich and Leeds. The change comes in Northern Ireland, where Belfast turns wet with about 3.8 mm of rain. Aberdeen turns breezier, with winds of 22 mph.
Saturday 31 October turns cooler in England and Wales, with highs of 9 to 11°C in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol. Rain returns to the north and west: Inverness could see about 2.1 mm, Glasgow about 1.1 mm and Belfast about 1.0 mm, with showers possible nearby. Newcastle looks mostly sunny but chilly, with a low of 4°C.
What it means for you
- Take a waterproof if you are in Wales, Manchester or Leeds today, and allow extra time for wet roads.
- On exposed coasts and in eastern Scotland, the breeze will feel stronger than the temperature suggests.
- On Thursday and Friday morning, drivers in the south and Midlands should watch for fog and leave extra distance.
- If you are travelling to Northern Ireland on Friday, expect a wet day.
- Saturday is the coolest day, so a warmer layer will be useful for evening plans.
