Australia weather today: rain in Melbourne, heat in the Outback
Rain soaks Melbourne and Canberra on Monday 2 November while the Outback bakes at 37°C. Heavy rain then reaches south-east Queensland on Tuesday.

AT A GLANCE
- Melbourne has the wettest day today, with 9.1 mm expected
- Alice Springs is the hottest of the main cities at 37°C
- Heavy rain hits Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Canberra on Tuesday 3 November
- Drier, sunnier weather returns to much of the south and east by Thursday 5 November
Australia today, Monday 2 November, is split in two: a wet day across Victoria, the ACT and the New South Wales coast, and hot, dry weather across the north and centre. Melbourne has the heaviest rain of the main cities with 9.1 mm, while Alice Springs reaches 37°C and Broome 36°C.
Today’s weather: rain in the south-east, heat in the interior
The wettest weather is in the south-east. Melbourne has rain with a high of 21°C, and some places nearby could see more, as much as 26.5 mm. Canberra also has rain, with a cool 20°C high and a chilly 11°C overnight low. Further north, Sydney and Newcastle have only light showers, but winds of 32 km/h and 31 km/h make it feel unsettled.
New South Wales, ACT and Victoria
Sydney and Newcastle sit in the mild range, with highs of 22°C and 23°C and light showers. Canberra and Melbourne have the steadier rain today. Because the showers on the coast are light, the bigger changes come tomorrow, when rain thickens across the region.
Queensland: warm, with a wet turn coming
Queensland is warm and mostly fine today. Brisbane has light showers and a high of 30°C, the Gold Coast is mostly sunny at 26°C, and Townsville is mostly sunny at 29°C with a very warm 26°C overnight low. Cairns has some rain, but only 1.4 mm, with a high of 31°C. The change comes tomorrow in the south-east of the state.
South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory
Adelaide is mostly sunny at 23°C with a fresh wind of 30 km/h, though showers are possible nearby. Perth is cloudy and mild at 20°C. Broome is the hot spot in the west, mostly sunny at 36°C. In the Northern Territory, Darwin is hot and humid at 33°C with light showers, and Alice Springs is mostly sunny at 37°C. Tasmania is quiet, with Hobart cloudy at 17°C and dry.
The next few days: Tuesday 3 November to Thursday 5 November
On Tuesday 3 November, heavy rain arrives in Brisbane (14.4 mm), the Gold Coast (13.0 mm) and Canberra (11.0 mm). Sydney turns wet with 7.1 mm, and Newcastle has winds of 45 km/h, the strongest of the main cities. Perth and Darwin also see rain.
By Wednesday 4 November, Queensland clears and turns sunny with highs of 31°C in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Melbourne has another wet day with 9.1 mm, and Adelaide has light showers. Perth warms to 26°C.
By Thursday 5 November, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide are mostly sunny, though cooler, with Melbourne at only 15°C. Sydney stays unsettled with rain and a high of 18°C. Darwin continues to see rain, while Broome stays at 36°C.
