The UK weather today, Friday 30 October, is dominated by fog across much of England, while the south coast and the south-west enjoy mostly sunny skies. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are cloudy, and it is dry almost everywhere, with no rain expected in any of the places we cover.
UK weather today: fog and a dry day
The big story is the fog. It sits across London, the Midlands, the East of England, the North West, Yorkshire and the North East, so early journeys may be slow and views limited. Because winds are light in most of these areas, the fog may take time to ease. London has a high of 15°C and a light wind of 7 mph.
Further north and west the picture changes. Cloud takes over, but there is no rain in the forecast, so it is a grey rather than a wet day.
Southern and south-western England
Southampton, Bristol and Plymouth are the places to be if you want sunshine. All three are mostly sunny and dry, with highs of 15°C, 15°C and 14°C. Plymouth is the breeziest of the three at 14 mph, which will feel fresh on the coast but is not strong.
London and the South East are different, because fog holds on there. It is still mild, with a low of 8°C overnight.
Midlands, East and northern England
Birmingham, Norwich, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle all have fog today. Birmingham reaches 13°C, Norwich 15°C, Manchester 13°C, Leeds 12°C and Newcastle 12°C. Newcastle has the stiffest breeze of this group at 12 mph, while the rest are light. Temperatures are mild for the time of year, so this is a murky day rather than a cold one.
Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
Wales is cloudy and dry. Cardiff and Aberystwyth both reach 15°C, with winds of 11 mph and 14 mph.
Scotland is also cloudy and dry. Inverness is the mildest at 15°C, while Glasgow and Edinburgh reach 13°C. The wind picks up towards the north-east, with Aberdeen at 19 mph, the joint-highest in our forecast. Belfast matches that figure at 19 mph under cloud, with a high of 14°C and a mild low of 11°C.
The next few days
Saturday 31 October stays foggy across much of England, including London, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester. Even the south coast loses its sunshine. Scotland stays mostly cloudy, but Aberdeen sees light showers and Inverness has rain of 1.2 mm, with showers possible nearby.
On Sunday 1 November the change moves east. London and Norwich have light showers, and Norwich could see showers nearby. Newcastle has light showers too. Edinburgh gets the wettest weather with 1.8 mm of rain. Fog lingers in the south-west, Midlands, North West and Yorkshire, while Glasgow, Aberdeen and Belfast turn mostly sunny.
By Monday 2 November, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff and Aberystwyth brighten, and Edinburgh is mostly sunny. It turns colder in Scotland: Glasgow reaches only 5°C with a low of 2°C, and winds are very light. Newcastle and London keep some light showers.
What it means for you
- Driving: in fog, slow down, use dipped headlights and leave a bigger gap to the vehicle ahead.
- Walking and cycling: wear bright or reflective clothing where visibility is poor.
- Outdoor plans: the south coast and south-west offer the best chance of sunshine today.
- Early next week: Scotland turns colder on Monday, so pack an extra layer.
