Heavy rain is the main story across the United States today, Monday 2 November. It falls in a broad zone from Minneapolis down through Kansas City, and separately in Miami and Denver, while the West Coast, Southwest and much of the East stay dry. Temperatures are mostly mild for early November.

Where is the heaviest rain today?

Miami has the strongest combination, with heavy rain of about 0.95 inches and winds of 24 mph, so expect a wet, blustery day in southern Florida. Further north, Minneapolis sees heavy rain of 0.61 inches and Kansas City 0.52 inches, with Kansas City’s surroundings possibly seeing a little more. Denver also has heavy rain, about 0.65 inches, under a chilly high of 50°F (10°C).

Northeast and Mid-Atlantic weather

The East is quiet. New York and Boston are cloudy and dry, with highs of 66°F (19°C) and 68°F (20°C). Washington is mostly sunny and a little cooler at 63°F (17°C). It is mild rather than cold, with light winds, though Boston is a touch breezier at 12 mph.

Southeast, South and Gulf Coast

Atlanta is cloudy and dry at 70°F (21°C). Dallas has rain but only about 0.06 inches, and it is warm at 84°F (29°C). Houston is cloudy and dry, also at 84°F (29°C). New Orleans sees light rain with winds of 19 mph, and showers are possible nearby.

The next few days

The wet zone in the middle of the country shifts and changes. On Tuesday 3 November Kansas City gets heavy rain of 1.13 inches, and San Francisco turns heavy too, with 0.44 inches and winds of 17 mph. Dallas and Houston also turn wet that day.

By Wednesday 4 November the focus moves east and north. Atlanta has heavy rain of 1.8 inches, and nearby areas could see more. Minneapolis is also heavy again, with 1.1 inches, and turns much colder at 54°F (12°C). Chicago is rainy and windy, with winds of 21 mph. Kansas City, Dallas and Houston dry out.

On Thursday 5 November, rain reaches New York, Boston and Washington, though totals look light, and it turns milder, with New York at 72°F (22°C). Minneapolis stays cool at 52°F (11°C), and Chicago cools to 57°F (14°C). Miami remains showery. The Southwest and Los Angeles stay sunny.

What it means for you

  • Allow extra time if driving through Minneapolis, Kansas City or Atlanta, as heavy rain slows traffic and can pool on roads.
  • In Miami, expect a rough day with strong winds, so secure loose outdoor items.
  • Pack a warm layer in Denver and Salt Lake City, where it is chilly and damp.
  • Check flight times if you are travelling through wetter cities, as delays can build up.
